Going off to college is probably one of the best things a person can do to further their education. The promise of a degree from a university seems achievable but is shadowed with the many challenges that come with a higher edification. Often many college students find themselves bothered by these obstacles which can determine whether the college student succeeds or not. There are many endeavors in college but it depends on how the student reacts to these situations. This synthesis will examine the motion picture Good Will Hunting and an essay by an author Bell Hooks entitled Keeping Close to Home: Class and Education. Very defensive and isolated Will Hunting is befriended very slowly by Sean McGuire to open up his emotional problem and to let them go. Will Hunting’s inability to trust, love and communicate handicaps him to do well in life with careers and relationships. In the essay entitled Keeping Close to Home: Class and Education, the author Bell Hooks tells of her struggles when she goes off to the prestigious college Stanford University at the age of 18. Coming from a working low class economic background hooks deals with ridicule from her family and the difficulties of adjusting from a lower class to a higher class setting at Stanford. The dilemma that Hooks’ face with her family is; she states, â€Å"My parents had not been delighted that I had been accepted and adamantly opposed my going so far from home† (p. 161). Reason for this adamant feeling was that Hooks was brought up during a period when women didn’t really leave the house to go to school.
